Hip Hop & Break Dance Overview
Hip Hop & Breakdance is a street-dance style that evolvedin the early 1970’s. Following the release of James Brown’s hit ‘Get on the Good Foot’ in 1969, youths of New York began mimicking Brown’s footsteps in the streets of South Bronx. The ‘Good Foot’, soon to be coined ‘B-boy’, combined high energy and acrobatic like dance moves. Breakdancing offered youths a constructive alternative to street gang violence. Requiring discipline and upper body strength, breakdance appealed typically to athletic men and was well suited for competition. By the time breaking had gained popularity, dance battles were well established. ‘Battles’ were performed either one-to-one or in crews. The winning side was determined by the breaker/s who could outperform the other by displaying a set of faster, more complicated and innovative moves..
